British High Commissioner Matt Woods Visits CHRDA in Buea

The British High Commissioner to Cameroon, Matt Woods, has visited the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA) in Buea, where discussions focused on human rights, the ongoing conflict in the North West and South West Regions, and preparations for forthcoming elections.

The High Commissioner and his delegation were received at CHRDA on Friday, November 6, by the organisation’s Executive Director, Barrister Felix Nkongho Agbor.

The visit provided an opportunity for CHRDA to present its work in promoting human rights, strengthening democratic governance, advancing justice and supporting efforts towards lasting peace in Cameroon.

Welcoming the delegation, Agbor expressed appreciation for the longstanding relationship between CHRDA and the British High Commission, including cooperation supported through the Commonwealth.

He highlighted the partnership’s contribution to programmes promoting women’s participation in peacebuilding, human rights monitoring, civic engagement and advocacy for access to information.

Addressing the situation in the North West and South West Regions, the CHRDA Executive Director drew attention to the impact of the ongoing conflict on civilians, particularly children, families and communities whose security, education and livelihoods have been affected.

He maintained that human rights violations by any party to the conflict should be condemned, while calling for civilian protection and accountability.

He also stressed the importance of inclusive dialogue that addresses the underlying causes of the crisis and gives affected communities a meaningful role in shaping solutions.

With legislative and municipal elections approaching, Agbor further highlighted the need for conditions that would allow citizens to participate safely and peacefully.

He identified civic education, youth engagement, women’s participation and efforts to tackle misinformation and hate speech as important priorities. He outlined three key areas for continued cooperation: civilian protection and human rights monitoring, inclusive community dialogue, and electoral peacebuilding.

CHRDA welcomed the visit and expressed appreciation to the British High Commissioner and his delegation for their interest in the organisation’s activities and its work across Cameroon.
