Rémy Nama Appointed President of Cameroon’s Constitutional Council
Cameroon President Paul Biya has appointed magistrate Rémy Nama as President of the Constitutional Council, following the death of his predecessor, Clément Atangana, earlier this month.
The appointment was announced on Friday, October 16, 2026, through a presidential decree, bringing to an end the vacancy at the head of the institution following Atangana’s death in Paris on October 4.
Nama is a magistrate and senior civil servant who previously served at the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, where he held responsibilities linked to legal affairs and administration.
His appointment places him at the head of one of Cameroon’s key constitutional institutions, which rules on the constitutionality of laws and oversees the regularity of presidential and parliamentary elections, as well as referendum operations, within its legal mandate.Abdoulaye Daouda Also Appointed.
In a related development, Abdoulaye Daouda has been appointed a member of the Constitutional Council. The presidential decisions also include appointments to the institution’s membership.
Nama succeeds Clément Atangana, who had led the Council since its effective installation in 2018. Following Atangana’s death, Professor Paul Nchoji Nkwi, the institution’s oldest member, reportedly assumed interim leadership while the appointment process was pending.
The transition comes as the Constitutional Council continues to play a central role in Cameroon’s constitutional and electoral processes.
