Buea Mayor Calls for Collective Responsibility as City-Wide Clean-Up Campaign Begins
The Buea Council and the Divisional Officer for Buea have launched a three-month city-wide clean-up campaign aimed at improving hygiene and sanitation in the “City of Legendary Hospitality.”
The campaign was launched at Bongo Square in the presence of South West Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai and brought together community leaders, hundreds of volunteers, transport workers, tricycle riders and representatives of non-governmental organisations.
Buea Mayor David Mafani Namange said the campaign seeks to “make Buea clean again”, with activities covering different aspects of hygiene and sanitation across the city.
He called on residents to take ownership of the initiative, stressing that maintaining a clean city requires the participation of the entire community.
The Mayor said the exercise should not be viewed as a one-off clean-up event but as a sustained movement towards a cleaner Buea. The Divisional Officer, Abba Abdouraman, also stressed the need for the campaign to continue beyond the clean-up exercise.
He said the initiative will focus not only on removing waste but also on sensitising residents about responsible waste disposal and recycling.
Several organisations specialising in plastic waste recycling participated in the launch, highlighting the growing focus on plastic pollution, which remains one of the major sanitation challenges facing the city.
The campaign comes after years of recurring concerns over waste management and sanitation in Buea, as well as previous clean-up initiatives whose long-term impact has varied.
For residents, the real test will be whether the current campaign can translate into sustained changes in waste disposal habits and keep Buea clean long after the three-month exercise ends.
